My question is -
What would be the maximum units in which a strata should be
self managed? We have 29 units and it would seem that we have no one to talk to regarding issues in our complex. There are just too many veried opinions and conflicts.

To ease the burden of self-management you should look into having your strata join one of the strata associations. From the association you will have access to shared experiences and resources which will better inform your strata council and members. If this is unattractive to you, you will probably find the fees of a strata management company to be even less attractive, if you can find one. Many companies would find a 29 unit strata to be too small to be bothers with.

I think the answer really depends on how much work the owner's are willing to do. 29 units can become quite a workload if there are only a couple of owner's willing to chip in time to get things done. A couple of things to think about is the workload of document management and providing packages to owners who are selling - this can be quite a time suck in itself. You can also look at partial management as well which may save you on strata fees.
